YES, I shall keep banging on my drums, trumpets, and keyboards. In any case if the rugby ‘experts’ do not take heed form this free advice, at the very least my readership will get to read about another perspective (which sometimes maybe better or more efficient!).
PROACTIVITY vs REACTIVITY? IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IN AUSTRALIAN RUGBY, SPONTANEOUS INVENTIONS ARE HAPPENING WITHOUT A SOUND STRATEGIC DIRECTION(???) QUESTIONS 4U: WHO ARE RUNNING THE SHOW, THE GAME, and THE BUSINESS in Rugby Australia(?)
Australian Rugby since 1995, has failed abysmally in STRATEGICALLY prepare itself for the new demands of the “Professional” era. YES, Rod Macqueen after a scrappy start in 1997… then with some novel ideas, amongst others ‘the 8 Channels’ (corridors-like) for the players to attack and support the ball carrier on one point of the deep advancement. Then, with the impetus of the Brumbies’ players nucleus, he built a decent Wallaby team which won the 2nd RWC in 1999. From there on we went downhill and here we are!
Am sure you will object, to my comment. Yet, I can assure you in the finals of 2003 and 2015 RWC we were nowhere near the teams of 1984, 1986, 1991 and 1999. In 2005 vs England, the Wallaby scrum fell apart, the Unthinkable happen (uncontested scrums???), would you like me to remember who was in that pack? No, you can Google if you want. No need to add to misery! However, coach Eddie Jones was unceremoniously dumped.
Here comes another idiotic symptom of Australian rugby management since 1982. Bob Dwyer, (twice), Eddie Jones, Ewen McKenzie, Michael Cheika, what do they have in common? What is it with the other 675 rugby clubs in Australia?
Shall I continue? Yes, please, now in 2008 John O’Neill decided (himself) to get a more ‘obedient’ coach from overseas, so Robbie Deans is in, and now we have also Dave Rennie to continue with the myth. Short and sharp: New Zealand provincial players have clarity of mind, attitude and soul, they are ‘un-coach-able’, they play extremely well without any ‘whips’. Therefore, I argue that NZ Provincial Coach reputation to me doesn’t stack up. So, if we are fixated with NZ Coaches? Why not enticing Sir Brian Lochore, Wayne Shelford, Sir Graham Henry or….mmm…Steve Hansen? A WINNINGFUL COACH?
“Not only the pigs are at fault (throwing floating sinful cut-out passes) But also the hand that feed them”. Let’s go to the numbers , who do not lie! Shall we?
In 2001, Rod Macqueen had the highest winning percentage ever, at 79.05%
In 2005, Eddie Jones = 57.89% with uncontested scrum vs England, Twickenham 2005)
2014, Ewen McKenzie 50% – 2019 Michael Cheika 50% – 2021, Dave Rennie 50%.
IN LIFE (at any pursuit or career) IF YOU DO NOT GO FORWARD – SOON YOU WILL GO BACKWARDS, most probably in a spiral descent. SOS Now, please…
I was told by the head hunters that the RA’s CEO position attracted a remuneration package of $800K plus. (Mmmm, not bad for an underperforming team!). Am happy to provide good advice FOC (Free of Charge): Hamish and Andy, you better fix the strategic direction of our RA Titanic, quick smart. We ALL ARE SINKING! (it is very painful to watch!)
